Hollywood Vampires - Seneca Niagara Casino, Niagara Falls, NY - July 9, 2016

Review by John Jeffrey, Photos - Thomas S. Orwat Jr.

Niagara Falls, NY - Saturday night's concert at the outdoor venue (set up in the parking lot) of the Seneca Niagara Casino was one of the most unique concert experiences I've endured in quite some time.  After what seemed like a torrential down-pour, the Hollywood Vampires (whose name derives from The Hollywood Vampires celebrity drinking club, formed by Alice Cooper in the 1970s, whose members included Ringo Starr of The Beatles and Keith Moon of The Who), wowed the crowd with an electrifying set of covers and two originals, most which are featured on the supergroup's 2015 studio album.

With the rain pushing the start time of the show back about an hour, the group took the stage around 9pm and wrapped things up close to 11 o'clock.  The amount of fun the current lineup of the Hollywood Vampires (featuring Alice Cooper - lead vocals, Johnny Depp -  rhythm/lead guitar, backing vocals, Joe Perry - lead guitar, Tommy Henriksen - rhythm guitar, backing vocals, Matt Sorum - drums, backing vocals, Robert DeLeo - bass, backing vocals, Bruce Witkin - keyboards, guitar, backing vocals) were having was simply contagious, as the crowd seemed to forget how miserably drenched they were by the rain, and the audience and the band seemed to merge into one rock and roll entity, together, honoring the music being played, originally written and performed by the rock stars who died from excess and other ailments.

The musical foundation of the band was quite impressive, as everything was built on a rock-solid rhythm section.  Starting with drummer Matt Sorum, if not being involved in the Guns 'n Roses "reunion" was any kind of let down, getting this gig - wow - talk about a consolation prize!!  Sorum is onstage, playing with legends, and is playing his heart out.  Not only is he pounding away on the skins, but his background vocals and harmonies on songs like, "Sweet Emotion" and "Ace of Spades" and "Whole Lotta Love" were just spot on.  Adding Robert DeLeo (STP) into the mix, what you may lose in name recognition (original bassist Duff McKagan had to bow out of the tour due to his role in the aforementioned GNR tour), the Hollywood Vampires certainly gained a heavier bottom end to the sound that just kicks you right in the chest.

In the guitar department, you have the rock legend from Aerosmith, Joe Perry, on one side, and on the other, you have the Hollywood 'bad boy' Johnny Depp.  Although Perry handled most of the lead work, Depp had his opportunities to shine in the spotlight, as he really seemed to get off when he was playing some slide guitar work and efficiently handled the opening lead part to the Cooper classic, "I'm 18."  Considering both Perry and Depp have the tendency to go rogue, and go off script, and solo in places that weren't originally intended, each lead player had their own back-up rhythm guitarist holding it down.  For Perry, he had the criminally under-rated Tommy Henriksen (from the Alice Cooper band), who by far, was the most technically proficient guitar player onstage, and Depp had the part-time guitarist/part-time keyboardist, Bruce Witkin rounding out the sound.

The Hollywood Vampires will make their late-night debut Monday, the band announced Thursday.

The supergroup — made up of Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, and Joe Perry — will stop by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in the midst of their first U.S. tour.

The rock crew previously hit television for last February’s Grammy Awards, performing a touching tribute to late Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister. They recently launched an 18-date North American trek, which wraps in Paso Robles, California later this month.

Joining Hollywood Vampires on tour are drummer Matt Sorum (the Cult, Guns N’ Roses), guitarist Tommy Henriksen (Alice Cooper’s band) and pianist, percussionist, and guitarist Bruce Witkin (Johnny Depp’s group the Kids). Stone Temple Pilots’ Robert DeLeo will fill in on bass for Duff McKagan, who’s currently on the road for Guns N’ Roses’ reunion tour.

By Brian Ives

Twenty five years ago this week, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released their, Into the Great Wide Open. The video for the album’s title track starred Johnny Depp as “Eddie,” a hopeful musician who moved to L.A. to become a rock star.

The story bears just a few similarities to Depp’s: he, too, moved to L.A. to pursue his musical dreams. A role in a little show called 21 Jump Streetand then in the first Nightmare on Elm Street film took him on a somewhat different career path than “Eddie’s.”

It’s a quarter of a century later, and he’s just kicked off a tour as a member of the Hollywood Vampires, alongside Alice Cooper and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry, two guys he most likely grew up worshiping; last night (July 3), their tour came to Atlantic City, New Jersey’s Borgata.

Ya done good kid!

So, there’s a lot of star power in the Vampires – the touring band also includes drummer Matt Sorum (formerly of Guns N Roses, Velvet Revolver and the Cult), and Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo (replacing Duff McKagan, now out on tour with GNR). The group is rounded out by guitarist Tommy Henriksen (from Alice Cooper’s band) and keyboardist/guitarist Bruce Witkin, who was Depp’s bandmate, pre-movie stardom, in a band called the Kids. On paper, it sounds amazing. But how good are they as a live band? And is Depp really a necessary addition to a band that’s already packed with stars (and guitar players)?

Well, first off, Depp’s guitar playing isn’t just a movie star hobby. Joe Perry has told me in interviews how great Depp is, and Perry isn’t really prone to hyperbole. But it’s one thing to hear about it, it’s another to actually see the guy play, and he is a great player, deserving of his spot in the band. Had he never gone to that Jump Street audition, he surely would have been able to be a musician for life (although he may not have been able to buy an island with his earnings). Also – to his credit – he never calls attention to himself, he lets his playing melt faces. To put it another way, he’s the Brad Whitford of this guitar team.

No band can be great without a great drummer. Only Axl Rose knows why he didn’t summon Matt Sorum back to GNR with Slash and Duff McKagan, but Rose’s loss is the Vampires’ gain. Sorum plays with the power of Bonham and Moon, and with the swing of John Densmore of the Doors and Mitch Mitchell of the Jimi Hendrix Experience; that combination is precisely what is needed for this band. He’s able to propel the Vampires through any song, whether it’s Love or Motorhead, Spirit or old-school Fleetwood Mac.

Hollywood Vampires Tour Dates Announced

The 58th GRAMMY Awards - Show

Following their wildly successful concerts at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles, in front of 100,000 screaming fans at the Rock In Rio festival, and their spectacular worldwide television debut on the 2016 Grammy Awards reaching a global audience of almost 25 million people, fans worldwide demanded more. HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES, the supergroup featuring international film star and musician Johnny Depp alongside Alice Cooper and AEROSMITH's Joe Perry, always deliver and arranged their schedules to give their fans what they want.

Today, HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES announce a full summer tour across the U.S. and Europe, kicking off May 24 in Verona, New York and continuing through. Joining the HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES on tour will be their rock star musician friends and modern-day Vampires Matt Sorum (GUNS N' ROSES, THE CULT) on drums, Robert DeLeo (STONE TEMPLE PILOTS) on bass, Tommy Henriksen (ALICE COOPER) on guitar, and Bruce Witkin (THE KIDS) on piano, percussion and guitar.

Says Perry: "Here is a gang of friends who came together really by chance and over the last year we were finally able to wrangle our schedules and the energy just fell into place. Playing with this line up is like a dream come true. After seeing the reaction at Rock In Rio in front of 100,000 fans, I know this band is going to tear the house down. Hell, I would want to be in the audience to see us rip it up."

A supergroup comprised of rock royalty and a Hollywood superstar, the VAMPIRES will hit the stage offering fans a non-stop, energetic rock concert like no other, performing their new single "Bad As I Am" from their new deluxe album, as well as renditions of popular classics including "My Generation", "Whole Lotta Love" and a "School's Out"/"Another Brick In The Wall" medley.

The HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES released a new digital deluxe version of their self-titled album. This expanded version includes three additional songs, including one original and two rocking covers. The deluxe version includes the scorching new single "Bad As I Am", an original song penned by Johnny Depp, Tommy Henriksen and Bruce Witkin and featuring Matt Sorum, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry, and Johnny Depp. Also included is "I'm A Boy", a WHO original, that was only available as a Japanese bonus track. "7 and 7 Is" is an unreleased track from the album sessions and is the classic song by the legendary Los Angeles band LOVE, a VAMPIRES special pick and one that Alice covered on his 1981 solo album, "Special Forces".

In 1969 on the Sunset Strip at a club called the Rainbow Bar & Grill, the HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES were born in the upstairs bar. It was a gathering place for the rock stars living in or passing through L.A. "To join the club, one simply had to out drink all of the members," says Alice Cooper, a founding member of the original VAMPIRES.

Cooper and good friend Johnny Depp got together and decided the spirit of the Hollywood Vampires should live again (minus the drinking). Cooper and Depp were joined by Joe Perry, who is an old friend of both, and the recording began: a tribute to the original Hollywood Vampires. An environment was born for great artists to hang, laugh and play together.
