    WEDNESDAY MAY 28, 2008
No Velvet Reality Velvet Revolver is looking for a new singer, but don’t expect them to turn their search into a reality series.  Drummer Matt Sorum tells Artisan News Service, “We got offered a couple of different television ideas you know.  Mark Burnett called us and asked us to do that ‘Rock Star’ thing and we basically said no to that.  We didn’t feel it was right for us.  No disrespect to him, but it just didn’t feel right for what we want to do.”  Sorum says the band will be revealing their plans in a couple of weeks and he expects it to surprise everyone.  “It’s exciting.  We’re moving forward.  We’re going to keep going and play rock ‘n’ roll and get a new guy singing, so we did it before and we’ll do it again,” says the drummer.

    Sorum Talks Weiland Exit
Velvet Revolver drummer Matt Sorum is finding plenty to do until his band names a new singer, but the topic of Scott Weiland’s exit from the group remains a constant.  Sorum tells Artisan News Service that when “Libertad” wasn’t as impactful as the band’s first release, he felt there were forces dangling STP in front of the vocalist and it created a weird vibe.  The drummer says things came to a head when Weiland commented during a March show in Glasgow about this tour being their last.  Sorum says he felt bad about the impression it made, and did a blog on his website as damage control.  However, much to his surprise, the blog was picked up by many outlets.  “I got the wrath of Mr. Scott Weiland skinny little guy as he is,” says Sorum.  “He’s the kind of guy that would drive by you in a car and shout some s*** to you, and then he’s go three buddies in there and then run.  It’s like ‘F*** you too, pal!’  You know?  If I saw him right now he’d probably be running down an alley way.  He knows I’m twice his size.”

MATT SORUM SAYS NICE THINGS ABOUT AXL AND WEILAND

Matt Sorum is famous for his time spent playing with Guns N’ Roses, but also for being a member of Velvet Revolver. Both bands have had trouble with their frontmen, but Matt tells Artisan News that he has buried the hatchet with Axl Rose. “I actually have a newfound liking and love for Axl Rose. You can print that. I’ve said a couple of bad things about Axl, and I think they’ve come back to bite me in the ass. The one thing I know about Axl Rose, as much as a d**k as he was at times, the stadium was usually sold out.” He also had some kind words for Scott Weiland, “It’s over. It’s all good. We’re moving on. I guess they’re doing fine, the STP. That’s his original band, and he probably feels more at home there. That’s cool.”

  • CAMP FREDDY A SUCCESS BECAUSE OF FRIENDSHIPS | Artisan News

MATT SORUM ON THE ACCIDENTAL START OF CAMP FREDDY
CAMP FREDDY A SUCCESS BECAUSE OF FRIENDSHIPS
MATT SORUM ON THE DIFFICULTY IN RECORDING A CAMP FREDDY ALBUM

Camp Freddy are in the midst of their month long residency at The Roxy in Hollywood, Ca and besides Billy Morrison (The Cult), Dave Navarro (Jane¹s Addiction), Matt Sorum (Guns N¹Roses, Velvet Revolver), Donovan Leitch (son of legendary folk singer Donovan), and Chris Chaney (Jane¹s Addiction), the band features a revolving door of some of music’s biggest names. Just in the first three weeks of their May 2008 residency, Camp Freddy welcomed Tommy Lee (Motley Crue), Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stone Sour), Nuno Bettencourt (Extreme), Brandon Boyd (Incubus), Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray), Warren DeMartini (Ratt), Billy Duffy (The Cult), Steve Jones (Sex Pistols), Juliette Lewis, Moby, Steven Perkins (Jane¹s Addiction), Brett Scallions (Fuel) and Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) to the stage to perform a wide range of cover songs with a certain amount of improvisation and Hollywood flair.

We caught up with drummer Matt Sorum, who has been behind the kit for The Cult, Guns N’Roses and Velvet Revolver to get his thoughts on how Camp Freddy got started.
“Camp Freddy kind of started by accident.  We got invited to play a party at the opening of The Standard in downtown (Los Angeles).  Donovan got called to do a jam and he put some musicians together and he called me and Dave Navarro and Billy Morrison and at the time we had a different bass player.  We went down and played and there was a lot of musicians in the audience, a lot of well known people.  Robbie Williams was down there and Twiggy form Marilyn Manson and some other guys, I can’t remember all the names but everybody seemed to want to jump up.”

Matt also talked about Camp Freddy being a success because of friendships and even admitted he makes a lot of the phone calls to see which of his friends is in L.A. and has time to sit in for a jam.

”Camp Freddy really works sort of as a friendship basis.  I make the phone calls a lot to my people that I know, Slash, Duff Steven Tyler, Billy from Green Day when he came I called him over at Capitol and said ‘Hey what are you doing tonight.’  Lemmy from Motorhead, same thing I called him.  I didn’t go through his manager, I didn’t go through his agent, I didn’t go through that s**t.  A lot of times that usually kaboshes the whole plan and the plan isn’t much except for getting together to play music just like we did when we were kids when we didn’t have a record deal and we didn’t have a manager and it was easy.” Although Matt mentioned the band started an album a few years ago that has yet to be completed, he talked about the difficulties in getting the album done.

“It’s a little bit difficult because people have other bands you know and when we get ready to go and try to record, you have to get all these clearances and you have to deal with their label and their manager.”

Camp Freddy have performed a number of benefit shows in N.Y. and L.A. as well as made appearances on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Late Late Show With Craig Kilborn, and Last Call with Carson Daly. Camp Freddy also host a weekly radio show on Los Angeles¹ acclaimed Indie 103.1 every Saturday from 6 to 8 PM. The bands Thursday night residency at The Roxy extends until May 29th.

WEST HOLLYWOOD, California – All-star rock project Camp Freddy tore it up in front of a star-studded, capacity crowd at The Roxy Theatre on Thursday night as part of their five-week residency at the venue, and Buzznet caught up with the band’s drummer.

“These five shows are way to bring rock ‘n’ roll back to the Sunset Strip,” Camp Freddy (and Velvet Revolver) drummer Matt Sorum told Buzznet about the residency. “We’ve got some new-wave artists. It’s very diverse, it’s not about what music you play, we’ve got rappers, people try to put too many tags and names on things, it’s music you know, I dig music.”

Before the core of Camp Freddy – Dave Navarro (Jane’s Addiction), Billy Morrison (The Cult), (Velvet Revolver), Donovan Leitch, (son of singer Donovan), Chris Chaney (Jane’s Addiction) and Sorum – took the stage, the audience was treated to a sexy 15 minutes from Darling Stilettos, a dance troupe co-produced by Sorum and his girlfriend. It was the perfect warm-up for the rock ‘n’ roll madness that was about to begin.

From the opening notes to the closing number, last night was a nonstop parade of guest vocalists and musicians jamming on classic cover tunes. Guest vocalists included Mark McGrath (Sugar Ray), Terri Nunn (Berlin), Jerry Cantrell (Alice in Chains) and Corey Parks (Nashville Pussy).

[Click the picture to view more from the show.]

One of the biggest surprises of the evening was Corey Taylor (Slipknot, Stone Sour), who took the stage shirtless and belted out “Them Bones” by Alice in Chains. Taylor – who has peformed with Alice in recent years – looked around the stage, with Cantrell on his left, and laughed, “Can I just say that this is the most surreal moment of my entire f—ing life!” Taylor then asked if anyone had heard of a band called Free (a British rock group that was big in the ’70s) and launched into one of the best versions I’ve heard of “Alright Now.”

Camp Freddy primarily revolve around their lead vocalists, but that didn’t stop drummers Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and Budgie (Siouxsie and The Banshees), from making use of the extra drum kit onstage, giving the crowd two, sometimes three, percussionists performing at one time. Throw in a little Vivian Campbell (Def Leppard), Mike Inez (Alice in Chains), a rousing rendition of “Rock Superstar” featuring B-Real and Sen-Dog of Cypress Hill, a whole lot of sexy Navarro, and you can begin to get a picture of the diversity that Camp Freddy thrive for.

What’s next for Camp Freddy? Two more weeks at The Roxy is certain, a possible television show is being discussed, and an album is in the works.

“We’ve done a bunch of covers, it’s being worked on, it’s coming together slowly,” Sorum said. “There is a record, there’s a lot of music done, we just need to lay vocals.  It’s a little difficult because every one has record labels, and we need to get clearance. Sometimes when you get big stars you can run into some difficulty business-wise. That’s the
wall we’ve hit. At Camp Freddy, we try to be artists for artists, we just talk to each other and work it out.”

    Camp Freddy set list:

    “Hello There” (Cheap Trick)

    “Song 2″ (Blur)

“Bad Reputation” – with Parks on vocals (Joan Jett)

“Rock ‘N’ Roll Star” – with Campbell (Oasis)

“The Metro” – with Nunn on vocals (Berlin)

“Christine” – with Nunn on vocals and Budgie on drums (Siouxsie and The Banshees)

“Antmusic” – with Budgie (Adam & The Ants)

“Eighties” – with McGrath on vocals (Killing Joke)

“Rock and Roll All Nite” – with Cantrell (Kiss)

“Jailbreak” – with Cantrell on vocals and The Cult‘s Billy Duffy (Thin Lizzy)

“Ain’t Talkin’ ‘Bout Love” – with Taylor on vocals (Van Halen)

“Rock Superstar” – with B-Real and Sen Dog (Cypress Hill)

    “Highway to Hell” – (AC/DC)

“Them Bones” – with Taylor, Cantrell and Inez (Alice in Chains)

“All Right Now” – with Taylor, Campbell and Smith (Free)

“I Wanna Be Your Dog” – with Cantrell, Campbell, Taylor, Parks, Duffy, Smith, Budgie and Darling Stilettos (The Stooges)
